Slavery In The Tempest Essays - Operas, Invisibility In Fiction
Slavery In The Tempest Slavery in The Tempest Slavery occurs on a widespread basis in The Tempest. Occurrence of slavery to many of the characters, all in different ways, helps to provide the atmosphere for the play. The obvious slaves are not the only slaves, as Prospero has basically got everybody entranced when he wants, to do whatever he wants with them. He can also control the way that they think. The first and most obvious slave is ariel. Ariel is an airy spirit who is promised his freedom by Prospero if his job is done well. His job was to entrance the visitors to the island under Prospero's control. What Ariel! My industrious servant, Ariel! That is what Prospero said in act 4, scene 1, line 33. He was talking to his slave, Ariel, who entranced the visitors to the island. Another example could be Alonso, the king of Naples. Since he is not in Naples, but on Prospero's island, and under his control, he is a slave in a way. In act 3, scene 3, lines 95-102, Alonso admits complete and utter loss of control. O, it is monstrous, monstrous! Methought the billows spoke and told me of it; The winds did sing it to me; and the thunder, that deep and dreadful organ pipe, pronounced the name of Prosper; it did bass my trespass. Therefore my son i' th' ooze is bedded; and I'll seek him deeper than e'er plummet sounded and with him there lie mudded. He is telling us that Prospero is in control of him. Prospero, Trinculo, and Stephano are in control of Caliban, the deformed son of Sycorax, and therefore Caliban is their slave. Monster lay-to your fingers; help to bear this away where my hogstead of wine is, or I'll turn you out of my kingdom. Go to, carry this. In act 4, scene 1, lines 250-253, Stephano told Caliban to carry something for him, or he would be out of his kingdom. He treats Caliban like dirt because he is their slave. In act 4, scene 1, lines 262-265, Prospero is describing how all of his former friends are now pretty much under his control, even though they don't know it, and enslaved to Prospero. At this hour lies at my mercy all mine enemies. Shortly shall my labors end, and thou shalt have the air at freedom. In act 5, scene 1, lines 7-10, it states Confined together in the same fashion as you gave in charge, just as you left them-all prisoners, sir, in the line grove which weather-fends your cell. Ariel is telling Prospero that the visitors are under his spell, as they still are the way that he left them. They cannot do much until he breaks the spell. In conclusion, The Tempest is a very good play to demonstrate the monstrosity of slavery in society. The play teaches lessons about slavery, and about classes of people, and how they react to their surroundings.

ABS essays
ABS essays The ABS, as it is commonly called is the abbreviation for Anti-Lock Braking System. This is a feature that many of the newer cars come fitted with. But it was not always the case, and still is not the case with several makes. What is the ABS? Before that question is answered, it is perhaps necessary to look at the "brakes". But simply, a brake is a system device that reduces speed or stops a moving object (in this case your car) by creating a force in the opposite direction. Insufficient pressure (brake torque) in the brake system causes "wheel lock" while the vehicle is moving above 80 km/h on a dry paved road surface. Premature "wheel lock" occurs from turbulent shock waves being generated by the uneven braking surfaces (rotors or drums contacting the pads/shoes), vibrating or slapping against the hydraulic pistons in either the clippers or the wheel cylinders. The force of these shock waves can be easily 100 times that of brake torque or the maximum pressure exerted on the rotating brake components. These shock waves have more than enough force to lock the wheels. Wheel lock occurs when brake torque forces exceed tyre grip forces. The impact would be much greater if the road surface is slippery due to rain, oil spills or other causes, or if the vehicle is driven at great speed. At speed, control of the car is difficult, especially at corners where there is a tendency to skid. Statistics show that approximately 40% of automobile accidents are due to skidding. These problems commonly occur on vehicles with the conventional brake system, without the added device called the ABS. The ABS absorbs the unwanted turbulent shock waves, and modulates the pulses thus permitting the wheel to continue turning under maximum braking pressure. The device "limits the degree of wheel slip of one or more of the wheels of the vehicle". This control permits the driver to steer away from any type of collision as long as there is friction bet...

Understanding the Nazi Idea of Volksgemeinschaft
Understanding the Nazi Idea of Volksgemeinschaft The Volksgemeinschaft was a central element in Nazi thinking, although it has proved difficult for historians to determine whether this was an ideology or just a nebulous concept built from propaganda displays. Essentially the Volksgemeinschaft was a new German society which rejected old religions, ideologies, and class divisions, instead forming a united German identity based around ideas of race, struggle, and state leadership. The Racist State The aim was the creation of the Volk, a nation or people made up of the most superior of the human races. This concept was derived from a simplistic corruption of Darwinian and relied on Social Darwinism, the idea that humanity was composed of different races, and these competed with one another for dominance: only the best race would lead after a survival of the fittest. Naturally the Nazis thought they were the Herrenvolk- Master Race- and they considered themselves to be pure Aryans; every other race was inferior, with some like Slavs, Romany, and Jews at the bottom of the ladder, and while the Aryans had to be kept pure, the bottom could be exploited, hated and eventually liquidated. The Volksgemeinschaft was thus inherently racist and contributed greatly to the Naziââ¬â¢s attempts at mass extermination. The Nazi State The Volksgemeinschaft didnââ¬â¢t just exclude different races, as competing ideologies were also rejected. The Volk was to be a one party state where the leader- currently Hitler- was accorded unquestioning obedience from his citizens, who handed over their freedoms in exchange for- in theory- their part in a smoothly functioning machine. ââ¬ËEin Volk, ein Reich, ein Fuhrerââ¬â¢: one people, one empire, one leader. Rival ideas like democracy, liberalism or- especially repugnant to the Nazis- communism was rejected, and many of their leaders arrested and imprisoned. Christianity, despite being promised protection from Hitler, also had no place in the Volk, as it was a rival to the central state and a successful Nazi government would have brought it to an end. Blood and Soil Once the Volksgemeinschaft had pure members of its master race, it needed things for them to do, and the solution was to be found in an idealistic interpretation of German history. Everyone in the Volk was to work together for the common good but to do it in accordance with mythical German values which portrayed the classic noble German as a land working peasant giving the state their blood and their toil. Blut und Boden, Blood and Soil, was a classic summary of this view. Obviously, the Volk had a large urban population, with many industrial workers, but their tasks were compared to and portrayed as part of this grand tradition. Of course traditional German values went hand in hand with the subjugation of womenââ¬â¢s interests, widely restricting them to being mothers. The Volksgemeinschaft was never written about or explained in the same way as rival ideas like communism, and may simply have been a highly successful propaganda tool rather than anything the Nazi leaders genuinely believed in. Equally, members of German society did, in places, show a commitment to the creation of the Volk. Consequently, we arent really sure to what extent the Volk was a practical reality rather than a theory, but Volksgemeinschaft does show quite clearly that Hitler wasnt a socialist or a communist, and instead pushed a race-based ideology. To what extent would it have been enacted if the Nazi state had been successful? The removal of races the Nazis considered lesser had begun, as had the march into living space to be turned into the pastoral ideal. Its possible it would have been put entirely in place, but would almost certainly have varied by region as the power games of the Nazi leaders reached a head.

Kuder Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Kuder - Assignment Example These reflect my personality as well as my upbringing. I have always been an individual who is ready to help and would not think it impossible to advance the interest and welfare of others above my own or in the interest of the greater good. In looking at specific variables in the result regarding the potential industries that I would thrive in, I realized that these are aligned with what I have been interested early on. For instance, I got high marks on health science. This was not really surprising because I have always been interested in biology in high school. I could still remember promising to be a doctor after we viewed a video lesson about avian flu and the impact of an epidemic on people. The focus of my extracurricular activities also reflected my interest in areas such as communication, technology and relationship with people. There are certain areas in the result that perplexed me a little. I scored high in education and training yet I did poorly in hospitality and tourism industries. The reason for this is that I have been considering a career in the latter cluster since I do like to cook and I am curious about the hospitality industry whereas the academe has not entered my mind as yet. But when I saw my work values I sort of understood this part. I am quite independent with a deep hunger for accomplishment: that is, I had to know and feel that I am doing something meaningful and important not just for others but also for the society. This thought also helped me understand why ââ¬â according to the assessment - I might not excel in managerial and administrative positions. My ethnic background sets great importance to management position and those around me tend to believe that it is one of the ultimate objectives of any career, to be the boss. I found that I will be more successful elsewhere. With all the information I have from the Kudder and Work Values assessments, I feel I am more in the position to choose the

Commercial Real Estate Development Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Commercial Real Estate Development - Essay Example The current trend as indicated in the recently published, Estate Gazette Feb 2009 states the impact of the economic downturn which has resulted in very low pent up demand as not many can afford to do so and who did have already traded . Location, layout, storey of building, area, height, storage space, interior decoration and construction framework, possibility to sub lease, inter changeability of formats, ownership distribution, availability of utilities, central air conditioning, and the level of management fee. Each of these factors will be elaborated in detail further, which will help in correctly inferring that supply and demand are not the sole factors affecting the value of commercial real estate and its development and regeneration. Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) gained popularity because of rising crimes, emerging anti social behavior and the environmental problems. In London this evolved as a quite recent phenomenon where the formal drive occurred for the first time in April 2001. Earlier some private were operating already, but then the government announced its very first. Schemes like Town Centre Management had started in 1980s, which were a part of public private partnerships for the benefit of businesses and other stake holders. Since concept of Business Improvement Districts kicked off as a tool for financing the revamping of residential neighbor hoods. Later Government in the Environment Committee of the House of Commons took up a project termed as town improvement zones, this was a bold move for the regeneration of inner city areas. Then in December 2001, further favor in these kind of zones was given Labour Government's white paper Strong Leadership Quality Public Services and this was in reali ty the first step towards urban regeneration policy. In 2003 testing was started with some areas - towns and cities, labeled as pilot locations, aimed at discovering the methodology to be adopted in making a Business Improvement District scheme a success; process and experience for managing and evaluating. Following this testing stage, government passed a resolution in 2004. As earlier mentioned, possibility of sub lease affects the value of a commercial real estate development which will now be further elaborated. Since restrictions on sub leasing affects the flexibility of further renting out a property and thus hugely affects. Since there are two sources of return from property - one, the savings that comes in the form of opportunity cost too and another from the rental income that is earned when property is given to be utilized by someone else. And unlike other assets, since property does not depreciate but there is always a hope of potential development and there is always a risk and return that is uncertain how these returns will move in future. All developers and investors base their decisions on number of factors - current income and future return generation capacity. Leasing patterns have a great impact on the development and regeneration of the commercial real estate. This is visible from the 1989 UK's market crash which tended to change the relationship that earlier governed between landlords and business tenants (Estates Gazette). Earlier it was
